Abstract

The Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (PERHILITAN) was established in 1889 (formerly called Mergastua), was mandated to spearhead wildlife conservation in Peninsular Malaysia. Till date, various issues and challenges faced by wildlife guardianship to strengthen wildlife conservation programs through management, enforcement, enrichment and research. Our responsibility is in managing and protecting of our treasurable wildlife and natural resources to ensure the sustainability of ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity. It involves various strategies and practices intended at conserving and safeguarding the well-being of both wildlife species and their habitats. The concept of wildlife guardianship encompasses the idea of being stewards to environment, taking on the responsibility to protect and nurture it for the benefit of the present and future generations. Key principles of wildlife guardianship are conservation and restoration that involves active actions at the natural habitats that support diverse flora and fauna. This includes sustainable resource management, mitigating human-wildlife conflicts by discovering solutions to reduce habitat encroachment, enforcing related legislation pertaining to wildlife conservation, mitigate the impact of human activities on wildlife and conducting public awareness on wildlife conservation. Effective wildlife guardianship requires collaboration between various stakeholders that could pool resources, share knowledge, and implement comprehensive conservation efforts. In order to sustain, wildlife guardianship requires a holistic and integrated approach, involving governments, corporate bodies, organizations, communities, and individuals working together to protect and preserve our natural heritage. By embracing this responsibility, we can ensure that wildlife continues to play their vital roles in the ecosystems and enrich our planet. PERHILITAN are committed to work towards improving services in leading wildlife conservation for the benefit of people so that wildlife and their habitats are preserved for future generations.
